1993 Mazda MX-5 Miata LE Limited Edition Rare Collector
Firstly, what is this rare car? (a little history)
Of the one million Miata's built, the 1993 Mazda Miata LE Limited Edition model
was Mazda's flagship Miata. There were 1500 1993 LE models sold in the U.S. and
300 in Canada. This is a Canadian car and can be imported into the US. These
cars are getting very rare. There are only two other known examples here in Nova
Scotia. This one is a survivor! The 1993 LE was Mazda’s first limited edition
luxury/sport Miata with all the creature comforts plus an upgraded sport
suspension. It remains the only Miata ever offered in North America with a red
interior. Special equipment on the 1993 LE included Brilliant Black exterior,
red leather seats, custom red floor mats and tonneau cover, power windows, power
mirrors, cruise control, limited slip differential, ABS brakes, Bilstein shocks,
14x6 BBS wheels, MSSS sound system (AM/FM-cassette-CD player with headrest
speakers, door tweeters and back thumpers), “Harley” door speaker covers.
The Miata as you may have already known is a very special car, being rated
consistently in the top 10 by Car & Driver. In the spring of 1993, Mazda created
a very special and unique Miata, the 93LE. This "LE" was a limited edition
production car. Mazda took a fully loaded B package miata (power mirrors,
power-assisted steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, headrest speakers,
cruise control, power windows and a power antenna) and added everything they
could think of from a performance and cosmetic standpoint to create the LE. The
most stunning feature of the LE was that it is a brilliant black car lined with
a deep red interior. No other colors were offered. The seats were made of red
leather, and the carpet and dash were also matched with the same color. The red
carpet floor mats also had the embroidered "Miata" script. Canadian cars had a
unique rear deck spoiler and 25th Anniversary badging on the front fenders and
floor mats. The 25th Anniversary badging refers to 25 years of Mazda in Canada.
Aluminum trim and panels brought out the "retro look" that is making the trend
in today's roadster market. The LE was truly designed ahead of its time. The
speaker kick panels had a shape reminiscent of a Harley-Davidson gas tank or or
a 1957 Corvette door panel. The tweeter speaker is also mounted with an aluminum
surround. The door sills were also aluminum with the "Miata" script as well.
Externally the LE was dressed with a front air dam, a rear lower skirt and a
rear lip-type spoiler. The Canadian versions didn’t include A/C, the front air
dam or a rear lower skirt (this car is a Canadian car). This rounded out the
subtle, yet aggressive sport stance of this car.
The stereo had a matching aluminum decor as well. This centerpiece faceplate
matched the LE theme perfectly and was intended to pay homage to the
quite-chromed Cobra cars of the 1960's. A stereo cover was also included as a
theft deterrent or as a dust-protectant. This Mazda Sensory Sound System that
was standard on the LE had a Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette/CD combination with a lower
"Bodysonic System" that controlled the sound equalization as well as the
seatback-mounted bass transducers. These "thumpers" are not subwoofers since
they do not make sound, however the bass that you feel makes a big difference
when driving in a convertible. There were also two perforations in the headrest
of both the driver and passenger seats to house a total of four small surround
speakers. The shift knob was wrapped in leather by Nardi.
Although the engine still was a 1.6L four cylinder, the suspension received many
upgrades as well. The springs were stiffer and coupled with factory-specified
Bilstein shock absorbers. This gave the LE a very "go-cart" feel, though many
tend to change these out for a more civilized daily driver. Another highlight of
the LE was the ultralight forged aluminum BBS wheels. These 14" wheels weigh
only 8.5lbs each, allowing the driver to benefit from decreased unsprung weight.
On unpredictable surfaces, the viscous-type limited-slip differential keeps
torque on the wheel with friction. The antilocking brake system (ABS) kept the
tires gripped on the road during hard braking. The soft top was the standard
black vinyl, however when the top was down, the red leather boot cover made the
rear deck of the LE complete. When the weather was colder, one could install the
red vinyl tonneau cover. In summary, this 93LE still remains one of the rarest
and best Miatas every built.
OK so if you are still with me - great. Now on with the details of this
particular car;
For the past 20 years I have owned several Miatas. I have also circuit track
raced them winning the Toyo Tires Spec Miata Championship in 2012 that
ultimately allowed me the opportunity to compete in the Mazdaspeed annual
Shootout competition in California. So I know my Miatas. I am the second owner
of this Miata and I bought it at an IMPACT auction. It had rear damage. I
contacted the original owner in Cape Breton, NS and he said his daughter left
the car in neutral and it went down his driveway and hit a tree. His insurance
company wrote it off. The car was too nice to part out, so I decided to repair
it. I replaced the rear trunk lid, rear valance & rear bumper. The car now has
had its mechanical fitness inspection done (as well as a new MVI) and has a
"rebuilt" title. I was planning on keeping this car for myself, therefore I
replaced several things above & beyond what it really needed. However I am
looking at other project opportunities, thus now offering this car for sale.

Although this car hasn't been driven much in the past 3 years (stored away in
heated garage) it is now ready for fun driving. This car has been a light-duty,
regular driver that really runs great. It is in decent overall condition. See
for yourself in the photos. The interior has signs of wear and is not perfect.
The paint is not show quality but decent. It has some scratches, some road rash
& dings. This can be expected from a 23 year old car. The tires are 50% and the
exhaust & clutch are original and in good condition. There is a small oil leak
at the rear main seal and is not worth fixing yet. The power windows are slow
and the tracks need to be cleaned and regreased - typical on these older Miatas.
Drive this car anywhere. The 93LE model has a Facebook Group and a world online
car Registry. Why not join the club with this car? It will have antique status
in just 7 years! This is your opportunity to own a rare and amazing car.
